Shapes, Gradients, and Clipping Masks

Shapes, Gradients, and Clipping Masks:
creating a photorealistic watch graphic
The goal of this project was to see how far I could push my graphic design skills to create a design that looked like a photorealistic watch. I hoped to come across challenges that would push my knowledge in illustrator to a new level.
The Sketching Process
Before heading to illustrator I started on paper sketching out angles and shading problems that I might encounter during the designing stage. By creating sketches it cut down a significant amount of extra time on the computer. I was able to see how the shadows layed on the design.
The Outline
I started off with the design by making an outline of the most prominent shapes that I saw existed. I also used the ruler tool a significant amount in my designing process to help me align things to exact. From here I was able to add gradients and a all of the small existing shapes.
Getting to the End
After completing the face of the watch I decided to change the band because my goal wasn't to design the same watch just a photorealistic one. I used the two reference images above to get the result of my finished watch design. This process taught me that focused time and effort can get you anywhere. It also taught me how to simplify and image and look at it as shapes and shadows. The goal of my photorealistic watch design is one that I will reference several times in my future designs.
